To vitamin or not to vitamin, that is the question…

I have always wondered if a daily vitamin was necessary. After all, if the only thing standing between me and rickets is a multivitamin, well sign me up. That, and they were on special at Walgreens–two for one. Win/win in my book. So, I decided to delve into the depths of vitamin quandary to finally find out what this wonderful pill that boasted the name “multi” was really worth.
As we continue to eat ourselves into obesity, we seem to be increasingly concerned about vitamin intake. Seems like the wrong thing to be concerned about if you ask me, but I digress. In fact, according to the National Institute of Health, nearly a third of Americans take a multivitamin daily. The whole darn vitamin industry has been growing in double digits over the past 10 years. Apparently we are all in agreement that a whopper doesn’t provide the body with enough nutrients to get through our day. I can see why these peeps are worried but dare I say that a pill, vitamin or not, may not be the best fix?
With two-thirds of Americans being overweight or obese, most people have gone on a restricted diet of some sorts in their life. With the decreased calorie intake, often nutrition is overlooked. It can be extremely difficult to get the amount of nutrients needed in a reduced calorie diet, even if the foods being consumed are healthy.
But what about for those that eat healthy? Does a fistful of kale give you enough vitamin A to sustain? Multiple studies also show that a multivitamin was linked to disease prevention. In fact, many doctors agree that even those that eat a healthy diet have gaps in nutrition due to the way that food is produced and stored.

Okay, so are you as confused as me? What I found is that the controversy is real people. And the answer is filed somewhere between how my littles produce more laundry in a week than a small country in Europe and who put the gum the floor of my car. Who knows? It seems that you can take any study and make it say what you want it to. So, I say if it makes you feel good, (and they are two for one at Walgreens, of course) do it. If not, don’t. The choice, my friend, is yours. However, rest assured that one should always rethink the whopper. Pretty sure a vitamin cannot erase that bad decision.
